Entrance nest box 9 and 10
Boxes 9 and 10 are 2 built-in observation boxes. They don't meet to the needs of Common Swifts. In the big box, I made a partition that gives me 2 nesting places with a combined entrance. Common Swifts don't like that. They want to have their own entrance. The partition goes until half the wall. (fig 1) The opening of the nesting place begins after 5 cm from the entrance, the Common Swift must make a choice between the left (box 9) and the right (box 10) side. (fig 2)
In 2001, in nest box 10, a couple of Common Swifts has raised 2 young Common Swifts. During observations, regular I saw that 1 Common Swift came in into nest box 9 and than, around the partition, went to nest box 10.
In 2002 there have raised 3 young Common Swifts in nest box 9. Then, during this season, at May 27 nest box 10 was occupied. This Common Swift has tried to show, without success, a partner the way to his nesting place. The entrance clear confuses Common Swifts.
Before the season of 2003 the entrance is changed. The partition is extending until 2 cm out of the front.
